Total knee replacement or artificial knee surgery is a minimal invasive procedure where the orthopaedic surgeon will operate through a small incision on your knee, when you are under general anaesthesia. The damaged knee is removed and replaced with a small plastic dome. This is attached to the knee cap with surgical cement to hold it in place. The incision is closed with surgical staples.

What should I expect immediately after Total knee replacement Surgery?

You will need to stay in hospital for a few days where your progress will be monitored by the orthopaedician and physiotherapist. You will be asked to move the knee immediately after surgery. To help you in this, the physiotherapist at Fortis Hospital Mulund will put you on the Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) machine that will move your knee joint. Besides medications to manage the pain, you will need to take certain precautions to allow the knee to heal completely. This may take a couple of months. The surgical staples will be removed during your follow-up visit to the hospital.

How long will the artificial knee joint last?

Total knee replacement can last up to 15 years.

How much pain will I feel after surgery? What can be done to relieve it?

It is natural to feel some pain after total knee replacement surgery and can last up to a few weeks. To help you manage the pain, your orthopaedician will put you on pain relieving medications suitable for your health condition.
