In death, a 34-year-old woman from Ambivli gives new lease of life to four patients listed for a lifesaving organ transplants

Kalyan, 16 September 2021: Fortis Hospital, Kalyan successfully enabled Mumbai’s 28th cadaveric donation and retrieval of 2021, after the kin of a 34-year-old woman who died of clots in the brain vessels, consented to donate her organs. Extraordinary efforts amidst the ongoing COVID19 pandemic, between surgical and non-surgical teams, Nursing teams, Medical Social Workers & Police officials made this milestone possible, after the donor’s husband consented to organ donation.

Survived by two young children and her husband, the donor had suffered a Corticovenous Sinus Thrombosis, and she was subsequently declared brain dead. The patient family was counselled by the Medical Social Workers after which the patients husband consented to donate her organs; the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) was contacted immediately. A green corridor was created to transport the retrieved organs, that is the Heart, the Liver and Kidneys to hospitals across Mumbai. Despite the challenges arising out of the public health crisis, successful donor maintenance and organ retrieval was initiated at Fortis Hospital, Kalyan.

Led by Dr. Sandeep Patil, Chief Intensivist, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan, the donor maintenance protocol was successfully initiated, thereby enabling successful retrievals.

Speaking about the cadaveric organ donation, Dr Supriya Amey, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan, said, “As much as the story brings hope to the family of the patients who received a new lease of life today, it also speaks of the courage of the donor family who made the courageous decision to donate during their time of grief. We are grateful of the bereaved family who in their time of loss thought of giving back to the society. Their act of kindness marked Mumbai’s 28th cadaveric donation and transplant. Medical teams, ZTCC Mumbai, Medical Social Workers and Police, played a pivotal role in enabling this cadaveric organ donation, we are thankful to them”.
